I drove home from dinner that evening feeling conflicted. Laurie’s words had stirred up a storm of emotions within me, making me question whether I could keep all the balls I was juggling in the air.

“Dating ,” I snorted, whispering to myself. “She’s out of her mind.”

With all the challenges I faced daily—the lack of adequate funding, the never-ending demands on my time by the cats, courts, and police, plus Evie’s issues—I reminded myself I was doing my best.

Even if I did sometimes hate doing it alone.

Despite Laurie’s teasing, I also knew that she cared deeply about me and wanted nothing more than to see me happy and fulfilled in every aspect of my life. And she was right about Belladonna and that psychic glowy table thing. With a newfound sense of resolve, I drove home determined to put Laurie’s words into action.

I would start by reaching out to Belladonna , who needed my help now more than ever before, and try to ease her suffering. No matter what it took.

Well , tomorrow.

I’d do it tomorrow.

As I went to pull into my driveway, I had to swerve late to avoid a car parked on the side of the road, its headlights off. It was a newer model sedan, its blue paint gleaming in the moonlight. There were no bumper stickers or other markings that would give me a clue who might be inside.

I slowed as I passed the car, trying to get a look at the driver. The windows were tinted, making it difficult to see inside. I could make out a figure in the driver’s seat, but couldn’t tell if it was a man or a woman.

Darn it. I didn’t look at the license plate.

As I pulled into my driveway and got out of my car, I kept my eye on the sedan and debated whether I should pull back out to see what the license plate was. I waited a few moments, watching, but there was no sign of movement from the other vehicle.

Someone’s probably parked there to rest, I told myself.

As I walked up the walkway to my front door, I shrugged off my unease, telling myself I was being paranoid.

But when I cast one last glance at the mystery car, it lurched into motion.

Its engine roared as it pulled away from the curb and zoomed off down the road, the headlights flaring like twin beacons as the vehicle sped up. The car’s tires screeched as it took a corner and vanished into the night.
